I can’t feel my ass, but my family tree is H U G E !!
Thursday, March 6th, 2008This past couple of weeks has been rather hectic. I walked out in the middle of a fire officer training class because apparently the guy teaching the class was too busy worrying about how good his resume sounded to all of us rather than concentrating on the fact that he is a racist. So, yeah. Might wanna have somebody look into a background before you hire a guy. Could be helpful. I did learn this, however; Don’t ever just ‘assume’ that the participants in the class you’re teaching want to hear your version of the origin of the word honky. Christ that guy was a friggin’ idiot. But ! The instructor for the morning class (yeah, I walked on a class 1 hour after returning from the lunch break on the first day; what?) brought cookies. Oh My God they were good. And I am a fat person, people (see rest of story). Hands down, after my grama’, and mama, the best damn Peanut Butter cookies I’ve had in my short 30 sumthin’ years. Thanks for those Chief ! Also, the pyramid built on the foundation of credibility using the management styles and theories as the upper stones was actually very neat and I will keep that close, remember it, and try to use that personally. Now, on to the real point of this post: I’m Fat, and My family is also huge….
My shift at work started a fitness challenge amongst ourselves. I’m not sure whose ‘gonna lose, but Holy Crap am I gonna win and let me tell you why. We started by taking our ‘body fat percentages’ with these calipers that I’m sure were purchased in some kind of S&M store (not into that, by the way). So, even after these things pinched the crap out of my ‘winter coat’, there was the added psychological aspect of your fat being so massive that fat reading calipers left bruises in you trying to measure your fatness. Turns out, I have 102% body fat which is a little hi for a 35 year old.
Next we did some measuring for baseline purposes. I did 24 sit-ups in a minute (non stop) and 8 push-ups in a minute (non stop). That’s right 8. Not 9, not 15, 8. William Tom Frank, people? I was not pleased with myself.
After that, we proceeded to run through a calisthenics routine that can only be described as what I would imagine it feels like getting your tongue pierced; with re-bar. The whole thing ends with this process called ‘Hell’ where you carry a bundle 8 lunges in one direction, throw it down, do 10 push-ups, pick the bundle back up, 8 lunges the other way, drop, 10 sit-ups. Pick the bundle back up, 8 lunges back, 9 push-ups, 8 lunges back, 9 sit-ups. So on and so forth all the way down to 1. It really feels great. My favorite part of it was this morning when I had to hang around the station to finish my morning ‘paper work’ because the station where I work has handrails next to the toilets. Thank God for the ADA (this time). I will keep you updated on our ‘progress’.
As for my family, well check this out. We came across a site called Geni.com that is really a social application for your family. If that made no sense, think ‘facebook’ or ‘linkedin’ for your family. If that made no sense, I’m actually kind of proud of you, in a way.
Here is how it works. You can start an account (it is free) and begin to invite your family members. Working together, you can build a family tree with profiles of each of the members of the fam, past and present. It has all the usual birthday and anniversary reminders, photos, news, etc. Mostly, this is just one of the best written applications I have come across in a long time. It is fun, easy to use, free, and accessible to all members of the family, all ages. Give it a shot !!
24 sit-ups, and 8 push-ups (you know I wouldn’t lie about that). Give it a shot and holler back with your results.

Refresh my memory about what a situp is again… it’s those ridiculous things some low-rent bars have where you have to bring your own alcohol, right? I can do 10 of those.
Link me to geni.ocm again for the family. I deleted it in a fit of isolationism.
