Students at Allie Ward Elementary had their first fire drill of the year when a kindergarten teacher discovered smoke in her classroom shortly after the first bell rang Tuesday morning.

The Abilene City Council will consider creating an Emergency Medical Service citizens advisory committee during its regular meeting at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at City Hall, 555 Walnut St. The committee would be charged with considering the shape of ambulance and first-responder resources for the city.

The city of Colorado City is reducing its staff in an effort to free enough money in its budget to alleviate a water shortage. City Manager Pete Kampfer said Friday that two more employees — both firefighters — were eliminated this week to reduce the staff to 36.
