Dozens of firefighters and nearly two dozen units confronted a fire at a vacant meat warehouse Thursday. According to a late-afternoon release from the San Antonio Fire Department, “the main fire is extinguished but smaller hot spots are still active.” The release added that because the building was prepared for demolition, firefighting had ended and a fire watch was begun “to ensure that there is not a resurgence” and that no other buildings were threatened.

At 4 p.m., Chief Charles Hood said about 65 firefighters remained at the scene, in the 1700 block of South Brazos. The warehouse was deemed too dangerous for firefighters to go inside, and so they continued to attack the blaze from outside.

Authorities conducted air quality tests in the neighborhood, and no problems were detected, Hood said.

No injuries were reported. The fire started shortly after noon Thursday. Neither a cause nor an estimate of damages was determined.
