Firefighters are trying to figure out what started a fire that destroyed a man’s Northwest Side home early Tuesday. Firefighters were called to a home off Cromwell, near Babcock around 1:00 a.m. When crews arrived, flames were shooting from the rooftop and dark smoke was billowing from inside the home. They said the fire started in the back of the home and spread quickly. It took firefighters more than hour to put out the flames. By the time the fire was out, the roof of the home had collapsed.

Fortunately, no one was inside the home at the time of the fire. The man who lived in the home, Michael Toudouze, told News 4 WOAI the fire took many of his family heirlooms. He said his family’s pictures, including some from as far back as the 1800’s, were stored in the attic and are now gone.

Arson investigators are now looking into what sparked the fire.
