Paul Sublett, 78, formerly of Bronte, died Friday, Oct. 2, 2009. Celebration of life services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Fort Chadbourne Cemetery by Shaffer Funeral Home.

Paul was known all his life for his sense of community. While living in Shamrock, Paul served as a member and fire chief of the Volunteer Fire Department for 15 years. In 1964, Paul was named president of Panhandle Fire Fighters Association. He was instrumental in the continued growth of the department and led the effort to acquire updated equipment for the Shamrock Fire Department. Paul was also a leader in the acquisition of the first firetruck for Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch. Always leading from the front, Paul never sent in his firefighters where he would not go himself. Time after time, he put himself at risk to protect the lives of others. After moving to Quitaque, Paul realized that the community was lacking basic emergency response services. He spearheaded an effort to acquire and stock an ambulance and personally conducted emergency medical technician training courses to staff the new emergency medical service.

Arriving in Bronte, in 1976, Paul once again recognized the need for an emergency medical service. He organized a fundraising campaign to purchase upgraded equipment and coordinated the personnel training to staff the ambulance. Paul was always on call. He never turned away an opportunity to support his community.
