An elderly man’s body was found by firefighters early Friday when they responded to a call at a home on the East Side, officials said. The fire began around 5 a.m. at the small home at the intersection of Aransas Avenue and South Walters Street.

San Antonio Fire Department spokewoman Melissa Sparks said the cause of the fire, which resulted in about $40,000 worth of damage, was undetermined. She said officials did not yet know the man’s name or age but said he was elderly. Sparks also did not want to speculate on the cause of death and said an autopsy was needed.

San Antonio Police Sgt. Dale Sanders said there were no obvious signs of trauma on the body but homicide, arson and the medical examiner’s office were all called to the house to investigate.

Sanders said there was heavy smoke inside the cluttered house when firefighters arrived.
