Arlington apartment blaze blamed on child with lighter

A one-alarm apartment fire in north Arlington on Friday was caused by a 4-year-old playing with a lighter, fire officials said. No one was seriously injured in the 9 a.m. blaze, which damaged two units at the Avalon Landing apartments, North Collins Street and Brown Boulevard. The fire started after the child ignited some bedding in a bedroom, said fire investigator Morkita Anthony. The child was at home with an adult at the time of the fire, he added.

Police closed Collins between Brown Boulevard and Washington Drive while firefighters responded to the call.

The Navy recruiters from the office across the street were the first ones there. They were helping to make sure everyone was out of the apartment building and didnt leave until the fire department arrived.
