A 20-acre grassfire burned acres near La Vernia Thursday afternoon. It took firefighters several hours to bring it under control. According to Edwin Baker, Wilson County Fire Marshall, at its height the fire threatened about 100 homes.

The location was south of La Vernia on FM 775 and CR 319.

From the air, the fire appeared to be in woods and brush next to a subdivision. A Texas Forest Service helicopter could be seen flying over the flames and dropping water. It then returned to a nearby pond to reload its bucket.

Scores of homes were in the path of the smoke, which could be seen for miles.
