An AT&T employee suffered major burns after he inadvertantly broke a major gas line which then ignited while working in the backyard of a residence in the 4100 block of Great Forest in Atascocita.

Officials of the Atascocita Volunteer Fire Department said the accident happened around 5 p.m. today, March 4. According to Bob Kelshaw, spokesman for the AVFD, the injured worker was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital with second degree burns covering approximately 20 percent of his body. No other injuries or property damage occurred, said Kelshaw.

Kelshaw added that the gas line catching fire is, although very unfortunate for the worker, a good thing in terms off burning off the gas and thus limiting the neighborhood’s exposure to the harmful toxin.

“We evacuated houses on both sides of the street as a precaution,” he said.
