A loud “pop” sound prompted residents of a home at 305 King Drive in Nursery to check their laundry room. What Manuela Brown and her husband Ramon found was the room engulfed in flames.

The couple and their pregnant daughter escaped the three bedroom mobile home through a back door.

Mission Valley and Nursery volunteers and Victoria firefighters responded to the fire at 9 p.m., said Tracy Fox, battalion chief with the Victoria Fire Department.

“The fire was controlled within 15 to 20 minutes,” he said.

Brown, a Victoria school district employee, stood from a distance to watch firefighters tend to her home of the past three years.

“If we hadn’t heard the pop, I don’t know if we would have gotten out,” Brown said.

Brown said their bedroom was located near the laundry room and flames were coming close to it.

“We’re safe and we’re out, that’s all that matters,” she said.

Fire officials said the home was a total loss. The Crossroads Chapter of the Red Cross was called to help the family Wednesday night.
