Abilene 2-Alarm Fire at Shopping Center

Abilene firefighters were called out for a two-alarm fire at a shopping strip near the intersection of South Clack Street and South 14th Street Saturday afternoon.

The fire began at Shadow Warriors Ninjitsu, 1810 S. Clack St., a martial arts and self-defense school. No one was at the business when the fire began, but employees at the occupied Domino’s Pizza next door were evacuated. There were no report of injuries.

Crews responded to the call at shortly before 2 p.m. They arrived to find heavy smoke billowing out of the building and immediately called for a second alarm.

Firefighters searched the affected stores and evacuated all occupants within 10 minutes, according to an Abilene Fire Department press release. The fire was ruled under control 14 minutes later.

Firefighters were on scene until 4:30 p.m., aerating in the smoke-filled strip — the businesses shared a common attic, said Abilene Fire Department inspector Paul Slabaugh. Investigators are still trying to determine a cause and no damage estimate was available Saturday.

Jonathan Sharp, the owner of the Domino’s store, said that the health department would be called out to inspect the restaurant as soon as possible.
